Speaking by Daniel
“The Great Wealth Story”
We often hear that economic disparities are increasing. Rapidly. The rich are getting richer. At the expense of the poor. The economic system must be really broken. Or is it?
In the lecture The Great Wealth Story, I show that the picture is actually different today. Completely different. The fact is that we are richer today than before, and all our assets are more evenly distributed than ever. How did this happen? Using data, historical comparisons, and educational examples, I explain what has made us richer—together. And why it is important to understand.
How should we think about our own wealth? And about that of others? Do you gain or lose from the fact that more and more 28-year-olds are becoming billionaires? Was Robin Hood right when he wanted to take from the rich and give to the poor? Why did Daniel’s parents make a bad real estate deal in the 1990s, and why are Germans the poorest population in the EU? Why should we applaud all the crazy entrepreneurs who start businesses? Is living in a rental property a waste of money, and why should 18-year-olds be encouraged to save for retirement? What should you have done with your money in 1980, and what should you do with it today? How can you speculate on the stock market even if you are completely uninterested in it? Why is Bill Gates so cool, and why should we celebrate new wealth? All those who own the least—why do they have so little? And should we really feel sorry for them? Is AI the first time we’ve been worried about our jobs? Why do women still own less than men, and how can paying taxes be cool?
One key question is: Can we have more and more super-rich people without increasing inequality? Yes, actually!
